Statistics Canada: 2021 Census Kick-Off Event on May 3

On May 3 at 1:00 pm EDT, Statistics Canada, in collaboration with Nunavut Arctic College (Iqaluit), will be virtually hosting the 2021 Census kick-off event. Register for the event here. Places are limited for the Zoom event, but the event will also be broadcast on Statistics Canada’s Facebook page for those who are not able to join.

National Equity Atlas: Racial Equity Data Lab launch on May 6

On May 6th, 2020 at 3:00pm ET, National Equity Atlas will be holding a webinar to coincide with the launch of their Racial Equity Data Lab, a new space on the Atlas with tools for telling equity stories, including maps, ready-to-use datasets and data visualizations. The webinar will offer more information on the Lab, how it can be used, and how National Equity Atlas are using it to support equity campaigns.

CBC: Montreal community groups press, once again, for race-based data on COVID-19

Community groups in Montreal are urging all levels of government to collect and publicize data on the disproportionate effects of the pandemic on the city's racialized and low-income populations. From CBC:

Nearly a year after the pandemic descended on Canada, community groups in Montreal are still pressing all levels of government to collect and publicize data on how COVID-19 is disproportionately affecting racialized minorities and low-income residents in the city.

CBC: More racially diverse areas reported much higher numbers of COVID-19 deaths

A new report from Statistics Canada titled Year in Review is showing a large disparity between COVID-19 mortality rates in Canada's most racially diverse neighbourhoods and its neighborhoods with overwhelmingly white populations. From CBC:

The most racially diverse neighbourhoods in Canada reported COVID-19 mortality rates more than twice as high as those reported by districts that are overwhelmingly white, according to new data released Wednesday by Statistics Canada.

CBC: StatsCan undertakes hiring spree ahead of 'contact-free' census

Statistics Canada have announced that they are planning to hire 32,000 new employees in preparation for the 2021 Census. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the census will be conducted contact-free where possible, with respondents being encouraged to complete the survey online, on paper or by phone.
