Statistics Canada is changing in their approach to “rural” in the upcoming Census. In essence, they will be eliminating “rural” from the census vocabulary. The practical implication of this is that for CMAs or Census Subdivisions with significant rural components, it will no longer be possible to distinguish the urban from the rural areas. This may be problematic for Regions such as Simcoe and Halton or The City of Ottawa that have a significant urban / rural mix. “Rural” data will no longer be collected or released for the Labour Force Survey or the Survey of Household Spending.
