Notes

Starting with 2019 data, the majority of the T1FF tables (Family, Individual and Senior tables) will include data for Census Subdivision geographies. Records with Census Subdivision level data are indicated in the "Level of geo" column with the value 71. If you are using Census Subdivision level data from the T1FF, please consult the "T1FF_CSD_Quality_Note.docx" document included in the file package.  The included Excel file provides a comparison between intercensal population estimates and the T1FF population estimates. The difference between these values should inform the user as to whether T1FF data at the CSD is reliable or not.

The data source for this table is the preliminary version of the T1 Family File, created by the Centre for Income and Socio-Economic Well-being Statistics of Statistics Canada. Information on the data source, the historical availability, definitions of the terms used, and the geographies available can be found in the Technical Reference Guide for the Preliminary Estimates from the T1 Family File (T1FF).

Tax filers are people who filed a tax return for the reference year and were alive at the end of the year. Only tax filers 15 years of age and over with wages, salaries and commissions are included.

Wages, salaries and commissions include employment pay and commissions as stated on T4 information slips, training allowances, tips, gratuities and royalties. It also includes tax-exempt employment income earned on an Indian reserve.

For the 2019 tax year, the extension of the filing and payment deadlines of income taxes had a small impact on the number of tax filers included in the preliminary tax data. Therefore caution should be used when interpreting moderate changes in counts between 2018 and 2019.
