Inventory of Community Data Sources

Database/Data product: Hospital Discharges, Discharge Abstract Database (DAD)

Data provider: Canadian Institute for Health Information

Description: Contains demographic, administrative and clinical data for hospital discharges (inpatient acute, chronic, rehabilitation) and day surgeries in Canada. Finer levels of geography may be possible, but will require review for confidentiality reasons. This database can be used to look at discharges for specific health conditions such as diabetes, mental illness or injuries.

Cost: The tables on the website are free. For user-defined tables, there is an administration fee of $1,000 and a production charge of $130/hour for Canadian health care facilities, governments, not-for-profit health agencies, universities, health professionals, and researchers from the public sector. For private commercial operations (including, but not limited to, software vendors and consultants), foreign clients and others not qualifying for the lower rate, there is an administration fee of $1,500 and an hourly production charge of $195.
